USS George Washington visits Chile Today
The USS George Washington put into the port of Valparaiso today, and conduct joint naval exercises with the Chilean Navy. This is the third year in a row for joint exercises, think Chile and the US is telling Hugo something?
When I visited in September 07' I was amazed at the port, and no joke the Chilean navy was in and out of the harbor constantly. They have a great naval tradition, and one of the largest navies in South America. As part of their Constitution 10% of all of the profits from the Copper mining in Chile must go to purchase equipment annually in Chile. Pretty interesting policy huh?
Undoubtedly we would conduct exercises meant to control access to the nearby Panama Canal clearing the area of submarines.

I saw the GW when it was off of Key West for Takeoff \ Landing practice near Boca Chica Naval Air Station a few years back and even with it 5 miles away she is an impressive ship...
When will the USS Roanald Reagan in town?
Don't know about USS Reagan. It would be cool if the Chileans had carrier capable aircraft where they could catch a couple traps.
Valparaiso is a neat city; has the most colorful roofs I've ever seen. Plus ancient funiculars.
Bet the navy guys have a great time there!
Ottie:
I was completely fascinated by the funiculars, or anscensors as they also called them. My goal was to ride each one, but some were closed.
Two places I want to visit before I get too old to enjoy them is Italy and Chile. I envy you Spank the Donkey. I am intrigued by Volcanoes.
They plenty volcanoes to go around, but the show right now is on the Big Island of Hawaii. Apparently it's beautiful at night, as long as you don't get caught in a sulpher gas cloud.
btw: Don't envy me, I can't afford to go down there, I just do...
Sean - hope you get to Italy. When you do, go south and see the Amalfi coast. It's a feast for the eyes. Want a volcano, go to Sicily and Mt Etna. It spouts every now and then but not as spectacularly as the one on the Big Island of Hawaii. Ecuador has active volcanoes; Japan, Indonesia and who knows when Mt. St Helens will start up again. - Husband and I went with Elderhostel to Sicily. Etna was active. Then took off on our on by ferry to Sardinia, rode buses up north; ferry to Corsica; rented a car for drive to the northern tip. Had no idea of the rough interior of Corsica. Snowcovered mtns in April and wild rivers. Capital Ajaccio on a beautiful halfmoon shaped bay. English not as common on Corsica (France). Ferry to La Spezia, Italy; home from Milano. Sean, go go go!!!!
Sorry, guess I disgressed from Chile. I get carried away when it comes to travel. :)
